My Story

This is my story of how I came to learn to make bobbin lace and then go on to teach:

I was 19 and it was the summer holidays. My Mum suggested I visit an exhibition at the local Community Centre in Amersham-on-the-Hill of the evening class works of “art”.  This was to encourage visitors to sign up for a class the following September.  I went along to look at my Mum’s pots in the Pottery Class exhibits and then found myself chatting to the tutor of the Bobbin Lacemaking class and having a go on the “Have-a-go” pillow.

Back at home, my Mum commented that I had taken a liking to the lacemaking and she encouraged me to look into it further.  However, the lace class met in a morning and I was at College.  So I visited the book shop and found a book that would teach me to make a pillow (with help from Mum), whittle my own bobbins from dowling (with help from Dad) and make lace.

It turned out that there was an evening class in the next town, Chesham, run by Anne and Frances, two very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and encouraging Tutors.
